Average of 6 ratings: 3.3 stars.
Description:
When one sees a beer with a darker complexion these days, more often than not it’s a Porter or Stout. However looks can be deceiving. There exists a style older than both and generally less well known; the Schwarzbier, which literally translated is “Black Beer.” Unlike its dark cousins which both hail from Britain and are highly hopped ales, Schwarzbier comes from Germany, is lightly hopped and is fermented using a bottom fermenting lager yeast. Samuel Adams® Black Lager is brewed in the tradition of the latter. A medium bodied beer brewed using several different roasts of malt to give the end product a smooth body and a depth of malt character that has to be tasted to be believed.

Has a nice dark brown-black color. You can just barely see into the glass. There is about 1 and 1/2 fingers of tan head that sticks around for most of the beer and leaves generous lacing on the glass. Looks very good.
Aroma - 3.0
Has a sweet smell. Can make out some malts with chocolate tones.
Mouthfeel - 3.0
It has a good amount of carbonation and a creamy feeling to it. It's a medium-bodied beer.
Taste - 4.0
Tastes of roasted malts, coffee, and some chocolate. Also has a sweet caramel flavor, but nothing too overwhelming.
Overall - 4.0
A pretty good balanced beer. Being a dark beer and not very heavy makes it very drinkable. I would try this again for sure.

A nice tan coloured head with a deep black colour. The head slowly leaves trails as it bubbles away.

A sweet bitter almost mocha aroma flows off of this lager, with the sweet mocha flavour lingering a bit.

A watery feel with some slight carbonation.

A nice dark mocha flavour comes off this flavour with a nice bitterness which lingers nicely on tongue.
Overall - 4.0
A very nice tasting American lager with a nice simple but great flavour and light enough to be enjoyed with any occasion.
