Description:
Scratch #15-2008 is our first collaborative beer in the Scratch series. We teamed up with St. Thomas Roasters of Linglestown to create a Double Espresso Oatmeal Stout.
The double in the name refers to the espresso (not the alcohol). Scratch #15’s espresso blend is a medium city-type roast featuring beans from three continents. St. Thomas Roasters roasted and ground the beans; we used them in our hopback. At the end of the boil the hot wort passed through the espresso beans to give a lush coffee espresso nose and hints of coffee flavor.
Chocolate, roasted and caramel malt flavors stand out, while the addition of oats gives Scratch #15 a full, round mouth feel. Galena and Ken Goldings hops are added to balance the overall flavor and not drive up the bitterness. The head retention diminishes quickly because of the oils from the espresso beans.

This has become Troeg's fastest selling beer. All of the cases were gone in less than 48 hours, and they don't expect the kegs to last past Monday. Since it's closed on Sundays, #15 will have been sold out in 3 days. Pretty impressive.

Appearance - 4.5
Picked up a growler of this at the brewery. It pours 2 fingers or thick looking, tan head that has a decent retention and leaves plenty of sticky lacing. The beer is a very dark brown that is difficult to see through.
Aroma - 4.0
It has a very pleasant coffee aroma. There is also a brown sugar smell, light chocolate and hops notes. It's a very inviting aroma.
Mouthfeel - 4.0
A medium-full bodied beer with a good amount of carbonation. It has a smooth, creamy feeling to it.
Taste - 5.0
It isn't as strongly coffee-flavored as the name(Double Expresso Oatmeal Stout) and aroma would lead you to believe. In the beginning is the oatmeal creaminess and light chocolate malts. Hops kick in towards the middle adding a little bitterness to the beer. The dark roasted coffee flavor hits at the end. It lingers in the aftertaste and coats the inside of your mouth. A very easy drinking brew with great flavor.
Overall - 4.5
I was glad to be able to pick up a growler of this. The cases were sold out in about a day and a half, so if you are thinking about trying it, I'd get to the brewery soon to try it on tap or take home a growler.
