Description:

This strong alluring ale is two beers in one. Cracking open a fresh bottle unleashes hops and heat with more than 100 IBUs emanating from three hop varieties and sweet burn of 9.3% ABV. Cellaring the Flying Mouflan in a cool dark place at 50 degrees for a minimum of four months will mellow out the hops and wash away the heat. If you can resist temptation you will be rewarded with two memorable beers in a single bottle.

Appearance - 4.0

Poured from a bomber that has been aged for about a year. It produced 1/2 finger of tan head that dissapated fairly quickly leaving a ring of lacing. The beer is mostly opaque and has a murky orange-ish brown color.

Aroma - 4.0

Some malt sweetness and dark fruits stand out most in the nose.

Mouthfeel - 4.0

Medium-bodied beer with good carbonation. Slightly sticky on the finish in the mouth.

Taste - 4.0

The hops have mellowed out a good bit in this. Some sweet malts and dark fruits mixed with a little bit of alcohol and some pretty mute hops. It certainly tastes more like a typical barley wine with the sweetness overpowering the citrus and bitterness from the hops. It finishes with some bitterness.

Overall - 4.0

The label doesn't lie. It's like two different beers when comparing it fresh and aged. I personally enjoy the more imperial IPA like qualities of the fresh brew over that of the barely wine qualities of the aged one. Even with the sweetness and heavily toned down hops this is still a great brew.

Poured this into my Mad Elf chalice. Pours 2 fingers of tan head that has a pretty good retention and leaves nice rings of lacing. The beer is a beautiful dark ruby red, almost a purple-ish brown color.

Aroma - 4.5

Lots of juicy citrus and piny hops combined with dark fruits like plum. The hops dominate definitely dominate the aroma though.

Mouthfeel - 4.0

A medium bodied beer with an abundant amount of carbonation, although it doesn't spoil the beer.

Taste - 5.0

The dark fruits hit first as well as a wood like flavor and make up most of the first half of the beer. Around the middle you get a good blast of hops, both floral and citrus, that linger into the finish mixing with a little bit of alcohol. Overall it does a pretty good job of hiding the alcohol in the finish, and only has a small bitterness to it. The finish is mostly clean.

Overall - 4.5

Usually I'm not a big fan of barley wines, but this is a different beast. It's like a mixed monster 1/2 barley wine 1/2 imperial IPA, which makes a delicious combo.

I'm aging another bottle for a year since this beer is supposed to transform as it ages and the hops mellow out. I'll update the review then.
